CENTER OF POLISH-UKRAINIAN CULTURE IN CRACOW

The project is a dialogue with the existing social, political, economic and social situation, with history and time. The project is an attempt to find an alternative way of spending time between two communities. Below I present the stages leading to the final effect of the project.

ANALYSIS

Why Cracow? I chose this place because of the rich Polish-Ukrainian history. My task will be to find solutions while finding Genius Loci (the spirit of the place). The Ukrainian presence in Cracow has been traditionally strong for many centuries. It allowed us to understand why Cracow at some point became the symbolic "capital" of the whole of Ukraine. The myth of Ukrainian Cracow has been strengthened over the centuries. After studying the history, I decided to locate the facility at the intersection of Straszewskiego and Podzamcze streets within a radius of about 600 meters from all objects related to Ukrainian history and community.

FUNCTIONAL PROJECT

The aim of the project was to create a logical division of interdependent zones. The building consists of 5 floors with different functionality. The underground car park with technical facilities is located on the lowest floor. Floor plan-1 is a concert hall for 120 people with back-up facilities.  There are dressing rooms, make-up rooms and warehouses. Additionally, cloakrooms have been designed to serve only this storey. On the ground floor, regardless of the rest of the building, a chapel has been designed, which is available daily for both Catholic and Orthodox people. The assumption is that ecumenical services for the unity of denominations are to be held there, with the participation of the main representatives of both churches. The exhibition hall is on the next floor. It has been designed in such a way that you can easily change the configuration and space of the room. The project assumes that there will be exhibitions showing Polish-Ukrainian history and culture, as well as art exhibitions created at the Center by young people of both nationalities. The next floor is the main library and the cafe. The most popular dishes from Poland and Ukraine will be served in the cafe. The library will contain collections of both Polish and Ukrainian origin. These are not only books, but also films and CDs. The library part has been connected to the upper storey, where a reading, relaxation and hobby space is designed - a meeting space. Additionally, on the top floor there are rooms where young people can study in arts. The main assumption of the concept was to create a place that would encourage people to visit and spend time there.
